How to Create a Facebook Ad


Most people have started to realize just how important digital marketing and advertising has become. If you haven’t, then you are living under a rock and need to come out now. In all seriousness though, marketing yourself online needs to be part of your plan if you want to get your name out there and bring in more business. Digital marketing is a must for modern brands because it allows companies to create and cultivate better customer relationships by engaging with customers on the brand website, blog, and social media accounts.

One great way to advertise is using Facebook advertising. Facebook ads lets you target your exact audience, so you are reaching the exact niche that you cater to. If you understand your customers then you can put your product right in front of them, leaving you with the best opportunity to make the sale. Not to mention, EVERYONE is on Facebook ALL OF THE TIME. Step 1: Select Your Campaign Objective

You can choose from a wide range of objectives for your campaign. Depending on what you choose that is what you’ll gain from the ad. For example, if you choose “Engagement” you will get more comments, likes and shares on your content but if you choose “Conversions” you will be driving more traffic to a website of your choosing. Here are your options:

Step 2: Name Your Ad Campaign

You might skip over this step and give it a random name but then when you come back to it to understand your metrics you will be confused on what the ad was actually trying to reach. It’s important to name them using specific information to help you understand what this ad campaign was trying to achieve. Here are some examples:

  • Client name / website

  • Target Audience / Location

  • Custom Audience

  • Facebook Page / date range

Step 3: Set Up Audience Targeting

This is where the targeting of location and interests come in. You will enter in everything to describe who your target audience is and what they look like to help Facebook put your ad right in front of them. The information you insert includes their location (including multiple zip codes or other factors), their age, gender, interests, behaviors, demographics and more. You will want to balance our being too broad and being too specific to get the best results. This is what this section looks like:

Step 4: Set Up Ad Placement

Facebook will have “automatic placements” selected which can include Facebook, Instagram and Audience Network, and will use whichever will give you the best results. You can choose to edit your placements if you know what works best for your business. Different placements include:

  • Facebook

  • Feed

  • Instant Articles

  • Right Column

  • Marketplace

  • Stories

  • Instagram

  • Feed

  • Stories

  • Audience Network

  • Native, banner and interstitial

  • In-stream videos

  • Rewarded videos

  • Messenger

  • Inbox

Step 5: Set Up Your Campaign Budget and Bidding

Picking the right budget for your campaign is critical to the success of your ad. There are two budget options: daily budget and lifetime budget. A daily budget will spend this sum every day during the dates you pick for your campaign. It won’t always be the same amount of spending per day because if Facebook spots a good opportunity, they might use 25% of the budget on that one day and then 10% the other, but it will never go over the set budget. The lifetime budget will divide the total campaign budget almost evenly across the campaign dates.

Step 6: Set Up Your Facebook Ads

This is the actual ads that you will be using to market to your audience. You will want them to look high quality and be entertaining so people will interact with it. It’s important to note that you will want to keep your text to a minimum for it to be approved by Facebook and give you the best results. You can select an existing image or video or create a new ad.
